Skills Workshops

Training is not just about getting dogs through the Good Citizens Awards. The Club is here to help owners (wherever possible) with any problems that they have with their dogs. To this end, we are now holding additional "skills workshops" which are open to all club members.

Recall

Our two part Recall Workshops – Part 1 is in the barn, and Part 2 is out in Mary & Mervyn’s back garden, have proven so popular that we are now running them on a monthly basis.  All the owners who participate feel more confident as a result - and they all go home with the right dog, so that’s a bonus!

In fact, the Recall Workshops are proving so successful, that we have now introduced Part 3 - the Great Outdoors. The 1st one was at Bedfont Lakes Dog Exercise area, where 13 dogs and their owners (anyone who has successfully completed Parts 1&2 was eligible to attend) came along and practised the recall techniques they had learnt previously. It was a great success for everyone and we have more planned.

Scent workshop

Initially introduced to help the owners of scenting breeds to teach their dogs to focus, our scent workshops are also proving to be a big hit.

Part 1 is divided between indoor work (focus) and outdoor work (tracking), while Part 2 is based entirely outside and continues to develop the dogs' tracking instincts.

Everyone who has taken part has thoroughly enjoyed it and we will be opening up future courses to all members.

Stay

Our occasional stay workshops consist of an hour of fun and games and, you guessed it, STAYING!

Designed to develop and strengthen the dog's stay using positive, reward based reinforcement of the correct behaviour, the stay workshop is run in small groups to allow the trainers to pin-point any unintentional body language that might be scuppering the stay.

Open to dogs of all ages/levels, the workshop is intended to give the handler and dog a solid foundation to build the length of stay required for their next Good Citizens award.
